Women did upanayana in India.

The Hārīta Dharmasūtra, one oft the oldest of the Dharmasūtras speaks of two paths for women: brahmavādinī and sadhyo-vadhū (Devaṇabhaṭṭa’s commentary in the 11th century Smrticandrikā & so the custom was true of medieval times also).

Brahmavādinīs undergo upanayana, and initiation into the 12-year period of Vedic study (identical to that of boys who do Vedic studentship). Sadhyovadhūs are the one's who choose the family-path and they must marry following their upanayana.
