Since a while now I was aware that performing tirthasnana in nadis, especially in mahanadis, is most effective for reducing dukha. Personal experience and feedback from at least a couple of people whom I had suggested the same. But hadn't understood the exact mechanism.

All I knew was that the nADI (rough english equivalent – nerves) get cleansed. But was recently reading the story of vishwamitra narrated by Devudu Narasimha Shastri-galu in his 'Mahabrahmana'. Wonderful explanation of this tattva.

He narrates the incident of rishi vashistha grieving the loss of his sons, in which unfortunate incident rishi vishwAmitra plays a role. vishwAmitra wants to make up for the mistake. rishi vAmadeva advises him to use the boons given by the ApOdEvas and help.

He says vasishta's dukha has increased so much that it is becoming nADi-gata (rough equivalent – getting stored in the nerves). Hence he asks vishwAmitra to instruct the sarasvati nadee to flood vasishta's ashrama, take the rishi away through the flood and drown him for a while.

vasishta is supposed to be placed on the banks again after washing him away for several yojanas. He explains that by doing so, the extreme sattva – satvik guNa – of the river will erode the accumulated dukha in the nADIs.

According to sanatana dharma – therefore – the overflowing of dukha (and other durguNas) leads to their accumulation in the nADIs – resulting in psychological conditions. Tirthasnana in mahAnadees – ganga, yamuna, kaveri and so on – greatly helps in reducing the accumulation.

It is important our generation and the next continue to give importance to tirthasnanas – as per the prescribed form. Visiting river banks as vacation activities is fine – but not the same as performing a shAstrOkta nadee-snAna. The loss, if not done, is only ours.

Padma purana – while talking about yamuna nadee – says something similar.
"Whether intentionally, or otherwise, if you perform snana in yamuna, you will not experience dukha in this or the other world" pic.twitter.com/12qqS8P0As— Pranasutra (@pranasutra) May 6, 2019
Kurma purana – while describing benefits of ganga nadee – says one who is afflicted with diseases – or afflicted with anger – will (get rid of them and) attain devaloka if he takes snana in ganga. pic.twitter.com/91VvUIwxQA
