Caste and Hinduism: what’s the story? [Excerpt]

Source: Dharma Speaks Channel

Learn about casteism and how it came about in India.  People have the wrong idea about casteism in India, in that it originated casteism because it has been around for longer than Christianity came about.  Really, casteism is an import from EUROPEAN countries because historical social stratification has always been present in Christian countries.  That is where casteism came from.  Europeans merely took what is their own social structure and applied it initially to get a census count of the different kinds of people in India. They also realized it could be used to divide up Indian society.  Today, it must be made clear what casteism really is and why is does not (and should not) apply to Indian society.  Watch this video to get a better understanding about varṇa and jāti (as opposed to casteism) and how they are understood in Indian society.
